Understanding this map

What this figure measures

For each passport, Passport Index records the entry rules of 198 countries for a tourist stay: free entry, visa issued on arrival, electronic authorisation or visa applied for online (eTA, US ESTA, e-visa), or a regular visa applied for at a consulate. The map counts the countries in each category; the tooltip gives the detail. A country missing from the map (very small states) still counts as a destination.

A deep inequality

At the end of 2024 a French, German, Spanish or Emirati citizen can enter 127 countries visa-free, a Japanese or American 116-117. An Indian only 27, a Pakistani 10, an Iraqi 8, an Afghan 4. A passport reflects the country's wealth and stability, and the agreements it has signed: countries mainly fear that visitors will stay to work or claim asylum.

What changes

The United Arab Emirates go from 92 visa-free countries in 2017 to 127 in 2024, thanks to active diplomacy (an agreement with the European Union in 2015, then dozens of others). China goes from 19 to 41, and opens its borders widely at the end of 2024 (67 nationalities admitted visa-free, against 15 in 2017). In 2020 the pandemic made everything collapse: border closures, suspended visas (France falls from 120 to 95 countries). The United States remain very closed the other way: almost all visitors need a visa or an electronic authorisation (ESTA) before leaving.

Limits

One snapshot per year (end of year; for 2024, the state in early January 2025). Electronic authorisations (eTA, ESTA) and e-visas are not classified the same way in every year: they are grouped together here, which makes the “visa required” view less regular (in 2020-2021 many countries switch to e-visas or close their borders). Rules change often and only concern tourism: working or settling is another matter. The new European (ETIAS) and British (ETA) authorisations are not yet taken into account.
