Understanding this map
Why density on the map
Colouring a country by its total population favours big countries: Russia would stand out more than Bangladesh, which has more people on a territory a hundred times smaller. Density relates population to area: you see where people cluster (the Ganges plain, eastern China, western Europe, the Nile delta) and where they are scarce.
A national average
Density is an average over the whole territory. Egypt shows about a hundred people per km², yet almost all live along the Nile, on a few percent of the country; Canada, at 4 per km², still has big cities.
The chart and borders
The chart keeps the total number of inhabitants, on a log scale: the same slope means the same growth rate. Each country is counted within today's borders. The world goes from one billion people around 1800 to over 8 billion, mostly after 1950. Before the first reliable censuses, these are estimates.
